Visual Impairment
In some parts of Malaysia, hundreds of thousands of people aged 50+ experience visual impairment, with a portion even living with blindness without access to corrective care.
Give Your Unused Frames a Second Life — And Someone a Second Sight
Second Sight was inspired by a simple moment within our community. During a neighbourhood visit near the Optisaver Senawang outlet, a member of the Optisaver team noticed an elderly couple selling keropok in front of a nearby bank. It was not part of any planned CSR activity — just a genuine human interaction.
While having a casual conversation, the team member asked whether they had ever gone for an eye health check. They shared that they had never done one before. Living on their own and focusing on daily survival, eye care simply did not feel like something they could prioritise. They also believed that getting glasses might be too expensive.
"Kan best kalau ada bantuan khas untuk mata."
He was not asking for charity. He was simply hoping that one day, there might be support that would allow him to see clearly again. That moment became a powerful reminder for us.
For many people, clear vision is something we take for granted. But for others, it is a privilege they cannot easily afford.
This encounter sparked the idea behind Second Sight — a movement created to make vision care more accessible, dignified, and meaningful for underserved communities.
Second Sight is not just about donating glasses. It is about restoring confidence, independence, and the simple ability to see the world clearly again. Because no one in our community should be forgotten.
In Malaysia and beyond, issues with sight are more common than many of us realize — yet too often go unaddressed.
In some parts of Malaysia, hundreds of thousands of people aged 50+ experience visual impairment, with a portion even living with blindness without access to corrective care.
Uncorrected refractive errors — like nearsightedness and farsightedness — remain a leading cause of low vision, even though they are easily treatable with proper glasses.
Among school-age populations, refractive errors affect a large proportion of children’s vision, highlighting how widespread the need for corrective eyewear is.
Second Sight is a community vision care programme by OptiSaver, stewarded by Alpro Foundation, designed to help people who are medically diagnosed at public hospitals but face barriers completing their vision care especially due to cost.
Through this programme, OptiSaver is committing to sponsor 1,500 pairs of prescription glasses for doctor-verified patients in need. Instead of letting prescriptions go unused, Second Sight helps turn them into real, wearable glasses and real improvements in daily life. Because a diagnosis should never be the end of care.
Many of us have something at home we no longer use — old spectacle frames sitting quietly in drawers. They once helped us study, work, drive, and live. Now, they can help someone else see clearly again.
When you donate your unused frames, they are professionally cleaned, repaired, and fully sanitized by our opticians.
Public hospital eye specialists identify and verify patients who genuinely need vision support and refer them.
OptiSaver sponsors the brand new lenses matching their prescription and fits them securely into the refurbished frames.
Second Sight brings together various elements of our community to make sure clear vision doesn't stop at a prescription.
Our dedicated medical partners diagnose visual conditions and prescribe correct lenses, identifying patients who face financial barriers.
Acts as the steward of the programme, managing hospital communications and ensuring resources reach the individuals who need them most.
Our retail stores and optometrists provide professional optical support, refurbishment services, lenses, and custom fittings.
Generous individuals who donate their good-condition, unused frames to any OptiSaver store, making the cycle of care complete.
